Differences Between Alpha (α) Vs Beta (β) Armor
Alpha (α) Has More Skills Per Armor Piece
An Alpha (α) armor piece will usually have more skills than a Beta (β) piece. This allows you to have more skills on your hunter, changing the way you hunt & move in battle.
The Skill System Activation Here!Choose Alpha (α) For More Skills
Hunters who like to have a lot of skills involved in their gameplay should focus on forging Alpha (α) armor pieces. They will be able to build their skill levels more easily with these pieces.
Beta (β) Has More Armor Slots
On the other hand, Beta (β) pieces will have more armor slots than its Alpha (α) counterpart. This allows you to decorate your armor with jewels, customizing your stats and skill not included in the armor piece.
Choose Beta (β) For Personalized Gameplay
Beta (β) pieces can create a very personalized game experience in Monster Hunter World. It provides a vast amount of freedom that allows hunters to specifically choose which skills they want to activate.
Alpha (α) & Beta (β) Have Different Appearances
Alpha (α) & Beta (β) armor sets look different from each other even if they are crafted from the same amount and type of material.
What Are Alpha (α) & Beta (β) Armor Sets?
Armor Crafted From High-Rank Monster Materials
Alpha (α) and beta (β) armor pieces are those you can craft once you reach High Rank in Monster Hunter World. These can be created from High Rank monster materials.
Different Defense Value & Skills From Low Rank
These armor pieces have a different defense value and skills from their low rank versions. They have higher defense power to help you survive in battle with more powerful monsters.
Decorations are upgrade gems in Monster Hunter World. They’re jewels that can be used to enhance weapons and armor with new skills. You’ll start getting them after you reach high rank. They’re pretty rare, and some players are unclear on how the system actually works. We’ve decided to write up a guide about Monster Hunter World decorations, jewels & gems, to show you how to get and use them.
You’ll gain access to the decorations system after you reach high rank, which is MHW’s version of new game plus. The game will let you know you’ve unlocked it, along with six star quests, alpha and beta armors, and more. When you talk to the smithy afterwards, you’ll get your first jewel.
How to use jewels & gems?
You can insert the gems into gear that has decoration slots. Go to the smithy and use the “set decorations” option. It will give you a list of all the equipment you have that supports jewels, as well as the list of gems you own. Both slots and jewels can have levels – the slot level needs to be the same or higher than the jewel level.
If you want to use a decoration on a weapon, you’ll need to upgrade it enough first. When it comes to armor, though, you’ll need to craft the beta version of the desired piece – alfa versions come with two skills, while beta versions have one skill and one gem slot.

Most of the time, you’ll get decorations from appraisal items, like the Mysterious Feystone. These can be obtained as quest rewards, bought from some merchants, or received from the Tailrider Safari. When you interact with the appraisal item, you’ll open it up and find a jewel or two of varying rarities. Your chances of getting them from quests are best if you do high rank quests (six stars, involving high rank versions of monsters.)
